NALC Health benefit plan is intended to provide members accessibility to quality medical care while maintaining a comprehensive benefit package. NALC Health benefit plan started in 1950, with 2 employees housed in a single room. During 1950s its membership grew to 30,000. The independent health plan employed 26 employees and occupied three rooms in the NALC Headquarters building in Washington. In early 1960s NALC Healt benefit plan became a part of the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program. Enrollment quadrupled to 101,503. The Plan used every available office space at the Headquarters building. In 1972 NALC Health benefit plan continued to grow in the federal program. The entire Plan moved to Reston, VA, by the end of the year. The staff was comprised of 229 employees and membership totaled 141,177. It was "bustin' at the seams" with 520 employees and membership of 220,000. The Reston building was inadequate, so the Plan moved to Ashburn, VA, on June 8, 1990.
